Just back from Stowe, and in a word, it was GREAT!
Funny how you can really look forward to meeting people that you have only met a time or two. Now that it is over, I can not wait to see them again!
The popular "Garage Front" display from Hudson was brought down for the show. Thanks to the relationship we have developped over the years with the show's organizers, we were able to get additional space for the display. Thanks too to all the willing helpers in maming short work of the set up.
Show day and there were 6 cars in attendance. 7 were registered, but a trailer problem kept Rick Meade's Roadster from being there, but not Rick!
The weather was beautiful, with a hint of clouds in the morning and glorious sunshine for the rest of the day. With the cars aligned, it was time for the finishing touches. A special thanks to Lynn Mulder who's creativity brought about the "mechanic" who would grace the garage theme. With a pair of coveralls, a few blankets, a pair of boots and a wooden "tibia" she created a mechanic who only charged half-price... well he was only half a mechanic!
The display and cars drew much attention from the croud. Photo opportunities were taken at the door of the garage, as people dropped by to see the cars. Again a number of former Singer owners as well as a few new and past members dropped by. Near the end of the show day on Saturday, we heard the word "Singer" over the PA and went running. As a special treat, the Singer club was awarded with the first Stowe British Invasion Car Club Participation Award!!! This was an incredible surprise. As many of you know, a lot goes in to arranging a meet. The rewards are seeing the people you know and like, sharing "war-stories" about restorations and near disasters. To be recognised by the organization that puts the Stowe event together was a treat.
The club and Singer marque were very well represented, and garnered much "air time" from the Stowe organizers as a spunky group od enthusiasts. A far cry from a marque that to most is associated with a certain sewing machine maker.
With Singers in class 47, there would be a while before our group would appear again, so time was waken with cleaning up the site so that a clean getaway could be made. Again, lots of hands did make for light work.
Class 47 winners were being announced and the usual "suspects" made up the first two spots. This is not a shot at the pre-war gang, the croud loves the pre-war cars, and Peter's Sports and Phillip's LeMans are beauts. The BIG surprise for me was that Wallace, my 47 Super Ten took 3rd place!!
I suspect (know) that the garage and mechanic did sway a lot of votes my way, so I am honoured to share the "glory" with all those who helped put it all together. First I would like to thank my family for their moral support. I would like to thank the organizers of the Sto... oops, the music is playing, my time for "thanks" is up.
The day ended with our usual gathering at the Golden Eagle Confrence room. Cheaper food was available at any of the fine eating establishments, and they do not ask you to bring your own drinks, but to be in the company of many old and new friends was worth it.
Awards were presented. My favorite was "Best First Drive (for limited distance) presenmted to Toni Haley. She managed to slip in her first drive at the controls in the Haley Roadster while on the picknik stop. The cahtting and laughs droned into the night. I would have wanted for more time, but there was still more show, and little tome for sleep.
The Sunday event day was much more subdued, even for Stowe. Missing was the usual excellence of a Ballam tailgate picknik, but the Ballams were there! Ed, fresh from an hour or two sleep, with Ann and the kids did show up (as promised). Good thing too since a lot of muscle power was needed to move the Super Ten from the display to the Singer club photo-op location. A good thing that Gene Abbondelo's wife Linda was on site as she would pilot Wallace for its longest run this side of the Atlantic.
Group shots and long good-byes ended off a great day and a great show, thanks in no small part to the people that make this type of event a treat to be part of.
